ISLAMABAD — Pakistan’s government has increased the price of petrol by Rs2.02 per litre while reducing the price of high-speed diesel by Rs3.59 per litre, as international oil-market volatility continues to affect domestic fuel costs.

Under the latest revision, petrol is now priced at Rs391.30 per litre, up from Rs389.28, while high-speed diesel has fallen to Rs408.53 per litre, down from Rs412.12. The revised rates are effective from September 26 through September 28, 2026.

The Petroleum Division has been issuing frequent fuel-price notifications under Pakistan’s newer pricing mechanism, which is designed to reflect changes in international petroleum markets more quickly.

Why Did Petrol Become More Expensive?

The latest petrol increase comes amid continued volatility in global crude-oil and refined-product prices.

Pakistan imports a significant portion of its petroleum requirements, which means international oil prices, freight costs, exchange-rate movements and supply disruptions can quickly affect local fuel prices.

Recent instability in the Middle East and concerns around energy shipments through major routes such as the Strait of Hormuz have added further uncertainty to global oil markets.

Why Did Diesel Become Cheaper?

While petrol moved higher, the price of high-speed diesel fell by Rs3.59 per litre.

Petrol and diesel do not always move in the same direction because their international benchmark prices, import costs and supply-demand conditions can differ.

The latest adjustment brings diesel down to Rs408.53 per litre.

That decline is particularly important because diesel is widely used in:

  • commercial transport
  • trucks and buses
  • agriculture
  • generators
  • industrial activity

A fall in diesel prices can therefore reduce some transport and logistics costs, although broader inflation depends on many other factors.

Pakistan Has Moved Toward More Frequent Fuel Price Reviews

Pakistan previously revised petroleum prices on a fortnightly basis.

But amid unusual volatility in international energy markets, the government moved toward more frequent pricing reviews.

Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik previously said the pricing mechanism uses recent international market averages, with the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority playing a larger role in determining fuel prices.

The Petroleum Division’s official website has been publishing regular petroleum-product price updates throughout September.

How Much Tax Is Included in Fuel Prices?

According to Dawn, the government continues to collect approximately Rs114 per litre in taxes and duties on petrol and Rs100 per litre on high-speed diesel.

These taxes and levies are an important part of Pakistan’s petroleum pricing structure.

That means changes in international crude prices are not the only factor affecting what motorists ultimately pay at the pump.

Petrol Prices Remain Well Above Early-2026 Levels

Even after several recent reductions and adjustments, fuel prices remain elevated compared with earlier in the year.

Dawn reported that petrol had reached a peak of Rs458.41 per litre on April 3, while high-speed diesel had climbed as high as Rs520.35 per litre before later declining.

The continuing volatility means motorists and businesses are seeing fuel prices change more frequently than under Pakistan’s previous pricing system.

What Does the Petrol Increase Mean for Consumers?

Petrol is heavily used by:

  • motorcycles
  • cars
  • rickshaws
  • ride-hailing services
  • small commercial vehicles

Even relatively small increases can affect household transport budgets when prices are already close to Rs400 per litre.

For businesses, fuel costs can also influence:

  • delivery charges
  • transportation costs
  • food prices
  • e-commerce logistics
  • employee commuting expenses

The diesel decrease may provide some offset for heavy transportation, but overall energy costs remain high.

Government Fuel Relief Measures

The government has also announced targeted fuel-relief measures aimed at lower-income motorists.

Recent reporting says the scheme is intended to provide subsidised petrol to eligible users of motorcycles, three-wheelers and smaller vehicles.

The programme is separate from the standard nationwide petrol price and has its own eligibility requirements.

What Happens After September 28?

The current prices are only confirmed through September 28.

Because Pakistan is now using a more frequent fuel-pricing mechanism, another revision can follow depending on international market conditions.

Motorists should therefore rely on fresh Petroleum Division or OGRA notifications rather than assuming the current price will remain unchanged for several weeks.

Quick Facts

Petrol price: Rs391.30 per litre
Petrol increase: Rs2.02

High-speed diesel: Rs408.53 per litre
Diesel reduction: Rs3.59

Effective period: September 26–28, 2026

Previous petrol price: Rs389.28
Previous diesel price: Rs412.12

The Bottom Line

Pakistan’s latest petroleum-price revision has produced mixed results for consumers.

Petrol has increased to Rs391.30 per litre, while diesel has dropped to Rs408.53 per litre.

The changes reflect continuing volatility in global energy markets and Pakistan’s shift toward more frequent fuel-price adjustments.

For motorists, the immediate impact is another increase in the cost of petrol.

For the transport and commercial sectors, the reduction in diesel provides some relief.

With another price review possible after September 28, fuel prices are likely to remain a closely watched economic issue across Pakistan.
